The "Sottosuolo" of Napoli! I've been to Naples before and after being there once I was not quite sure I would ever go back. To me, it was dirty and dangerous and just a place to pass through on the way to somewhere else like Capri, Ischia, or the Amalfi Coast. However, a few months back, Naples Underground was featured on the show Francesco's Italy on the travel channel. It caught my attention and I definitely hope to see it in person one day.
The Napoli Sotterranea Web site (source of the image above) has a great description of this "Parallel City." Dating from the Greco-Roman periods, it is a literal honeycomb of interconnected tunnels, caverns, aqueducts, and huge voids left when volcanic Tufo, a yellowish sandstone, was excavated to build the city's palaces and villas. Today, you can take a tour of this fascinating "basement city."
The Web site Napoli Sotterranea has a virtual tour of the underground.
Despite its literal hidden gems, Napoli (Naples) still has many problems. Just this month, newspapers are reporting that there is a trash emergency in Naples where rubbish is piled 1.5 meters high blocking roads. See article here. Italy's newspaper Corriere della Sera has a picture gallery of the trash problem here. Articles and scenes like the ones mentioned above, make you want to bypass Naples and head on to Capri!
