36 Hours in Cinque Terre

This past Sunday's New York Times had an article "36 Hours in Cinque Terre" which can be read here.

Cinque Terre is five terraced villages that cling to the coast: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore (my favorite). This UNESCO World Heritage site encompasses a national park and protected marine area, and has several walking paths.

We are thinking of possibly leasing a car through Auto Europe through a special program they have. If we do, we will most likely pick the car up in Nice, France (you avoid an extra fee if the car is picked up in France vs Italy) and stop in the Cinque Terre on the way back. I still have to do some research to see if Ollie could hike with us!

The mountains are covered by terraced vineyards that drop into the Mediterranean.

Cinque Terre is part of the Italian Rivieria. This area is to the east of Genoa and is part of the Riveria di Levante, the Rivieria of the Rising Sun (the part of the riviera to the west of Genoa is the Riviera di Ponente-the Riviera of the Setting Sun).

Love Cinque Terre! I wish it wasn't so crowded with tourists, but I totally understand why. I'd love to visit there in the winter when it's empty - I love the beach in winter anyway.

I can't recommend the Cinque Terre enough. I hope Oliver can hike with you. Like Figs said, the summer is very crowded. I can't wait to read more about your adventures in Italy and congratulations on your move!
